3 Years in Action
For more than 3 years, Similar Ground has been stepping up to build stronger, more resilient communities.
Similar Ground is a youth-led, community-based organisation that was founded by young people in Northern Uganda. Our story started in 2017 , when two groups of South Sudanese refugees and local Ugandan host community youth got together for a War Child UK youth-led advocacy programme called VoiceMore. We worked together for two years researching issues related to separated and orphaned children in our community and conducting advocacy to help better protect them.
When the programme finished, we decided to set up our own organisation, run by young people for young people. In 2020 we founded Similar Ground and started organising our own community-based protection, education, and livelihoods programmes. Similar Ground is run by 6 permanent members and 4 volunteers. We are a registered charity under Uganda law and work in close collaboration with local authorities and other NGOs in our area.
Patrick Kumi helped found Similar Ground and supports the organisations international advocacy. In 2016, he moved to Uganda after leaving his home country during the 2016 South Sudan conflict. Patrick and his family settled in Bidibidi, one of the largest refugee settlements in the world Patrick joined started volunteering and then working with various international NGOs in Bidibdi Before starting
his Diploma while participating in VoiceMore. In 2019, He was selected by his team members to represent them in Amsterdam, Netherlands for a global mental health conference. Patrick continues to conduct international advocacy on issues faced by children living in conflict countries. This has also included addressing the UN Security Council in 2022.
Louis, Cosmas, Annet and Jackline became the active members who kept on contributing to the mission. The group starting operating as Time for change initiative.
