Healthy and Empowered Youth for Healthy & Resilient Communities in Rural Uganda(HEYO)

The HEYO Project is implemented by SRHR Alliance Uganda in partnership with Cordaid International and Local Partners (Similar Ground, Nature talent) in Bidibidi and 4 others in Imvepi. Together, they are working to empower young people and create healthier, more resilient communities in Northern Uganda.
Location
The project operates in Terego and Yumbe districts, with activities also reported in Bidibidi Refugee Settlement, one of the largest refugee settlements in Uganda.
Main Objectives
Address teenage pregnancy and child marriage
Promote Sexual and Reproductive Health and Rights (SRHR)
Empower youth through advocacy campaigns and health entrepreneurship
Strengthen community engagement and support youth-led initiatives
Approach
Peer-to-Peer Education: Young people are trained and supported to serve as champions and mentors in their communities.
Community-Rooted Activities: Implementation is done through local community-based organizations and refugee-led groups, ensuring sustainability and relevance.
Promising Outcomes (as of 2024)
Teenage pregnancy rate among participants dropped to 13%
Contraceptive use increased to 31%
Youth champions are actively leading advocacy efforts and providing peer support
