Transforming Lives Through Music
For many children in Bidibidi Refugee Settlement, this is not their first home. Their families fled here to escape war and find safety after conflict destroyed their communities and lives. Others face challenges like dropping out of school to help their families or struggling with homelessness, trying to survive by doing small jobs.
But every week, they come to a safe space where they can meet, share their struggles, and express their feelings through music – at a Music for Social Change session. These sessions are part of our work and are led by the children themselves, giving them the chance to feel heard and supported.
In this safe space, children also receive individual emotional support to help them heal from the challenges they face. Through music, they learn to express themselves, identify problems in their community, and speak up for positive change. These sessions give children hope, confidence, and the tools to build a better future for themselves and their community.
Since 2022, we have worked with many children in Bidibidi Refugee Settlement through our Music for Social Change program. During this time, we have helped children express their feelings and share their stories through music. Together, we recorded and launched a musical album featuring their voices, sharing their experiences and hopes with the world.
In our sessions, children not only sing but also learn to play musical instruments like drums and guitars. They work together to write their own songs, inspired by the challenges they face in their community. These songs talk about issues like lack of education, child labor, and the importance of peace and unity.
The children’s songs are played on local radio stations and in villages, helping to raise awareness and inspire change within their communities. Through this program, children not only heal emotionally but also become strong advocates for improving their lives and the lives of others.
This initiative gives children a chance to develop their talents, build confidence, and connect with others, all while creating a positive impact in their communities. Music has become their tool for healing, learning, and creating hope for the future.
